Media & Cognition

Media, Technology & Education

Your students are distracted, anxious, and screen-dependent. What are you going to do about it?

Media, Technology & Education is a six-session professional learning program designed to help educators understand the impact of a screen-saturated age on students and to help them lead with thought and logic.

Why Media, Technology & Education?

An Anxious Generation.
Phone-based childhoods.
Fragmented attention.
Will educators keep adding screens to their classrooms?
Your classroom is now competing with algorithms. The students’ relationship with knowledge has changed. What does that demand of educators?

Phone-based childhoods have changed what students can do, how long they can focus, and what they expect from learning. Most institutions have responded with policies (if at all); this program responds with understanding.

Over six sessions, participants engage seriously with what media does to the mind;  and leave with the frameworks and tools to design learning experiences that are intentional and genuinely human-centered.

Anchored in the work of Neil Postman, Jonathan Haidt, Mayer, and Doug Lemov.

It is expected that by the end of this course participants would be able to:

Examine media's psychological impact

Critically analyze how technology shapes student attention, mental health, identity, and cognitive depth.

Design cognitively sound learning

Apply cognitive load principles to create multimedia learning experiences that work with the brain, not against it.

Deploy active, critical pedagogy

Use Directed Viewing Thinking Activities, Socratic questioning, and AV resources to develop students as active, self-directed thinkers.

Teach digital literacy as a discipline

Equip students to evaluate digital sources, identify bias and propaganda, and navigate digital spaces with ethical and critical responsibility.

FAQs

No. The program is built for educators, not researchers – concepts from cognitive science and media theory are introduced clearly, with direct classroom application.
Not at all. The frameworks apply across primary, secondary, and university contexts – anywhere students bring screens and shortened attention spans into the room.

All sessions are held live online. Sessions are collaborative and interactive, not passive listening. You’ll also have access to resources and notes between sessions via Google Classroom.

Yes. Participants who complete the program receive a Certificate of Completion from Edwise.
